i wrote "the boy who floated freely" during the month of november 2004 in a tiny apartment in philadelphia. my roommate isaac gave me a lot of perspective on the songs as i was writing them, especially "giver's reply" where he suggested that i was over doing the "fairytale" falsetto vocal style, and that i should do something completely different with this song. this got me to put down my guitar, bring out the keyboard, and sing in my normal voice. he also suggested that during the "chorus", which was originally bare, i needed to have something more. i believe he expressed how the song made him think of kids marching while banging on pots and pans. i agreed, seeing his vision completely and truly appreciating his honest critics.

every once and a while you can hear isaac shuffling around in the background doing dishes, making tea. you can also hear our noisy heater switch on and off trying to maintain an even temperature in the space.
